Subset is a proprietary data subsetting tool used for the shrinking of production datasets when moving them to a testing database for use in development, testing, QA & training. What this means in layman's terms is that Subset can parse a very large amount of structured data, and make a smaller representation of it that's still up to standard with what you'd expect to use for testing!
Conventionally, businesses take their production database and copy it over in its entirety to a test database. This is, in summary:
Slow, when considering the amount of time used to backup and restore large databases
Expensive, due to the fact that a testing database would have to be as large as the production database
Inflexible, as the decision to have multiple testing databases would exacerbate both of the aforementioned problems
Subset simplifies the data export process, and provides an intuitive user interface to support developers in making their own subsetting templates. This is faster than traditional backups, enables you to have multiple smaller test databases for a fraction of the cost, and allows testers to execute pre-configured subsetting commands without having to access the database directly.
In this manual
In this manual you will find an exhaustive explanation of the features, functionality and options available to you as a Subset developer. The manual aims to provide you with all the tools you need to use our software, and get the most out of it. It is, however, not an FAQ or knowledge base for known issues. For this, we have a separate knowledge base available on our documentation site. To navigate the manual, please use the left hand index to browse the articles, or use the search bar to search for a specific topic you'd like to know more about. If you feel any information is lacking we encourage you to contact us and describe what it is you're missing. The creation of high-quality material for our partners to use is important to DATPROF, and we're consistently working on expanding the amount of information we include with our software, and improving the readability of its content.
Accompanying the manual, training material is available via the DATPROF Subset Training. The training material serves as a companion to this manual, and we suggest using both to gain a formative understanding of how to work with our software.
This manual is continuously updated, and it is possible to select the version-appropriate material of the manual at the top-right of this page.
